A Brief History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day, formerly known
as Armistice Day, originated in 1918 as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end
of World War I. In 1938, the legislation declared the November 11th
holiday to be “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter
celebrated and as ‘Armistice Day’ to honor World War I veterans”. After
several U.S. Bill amendments, President Gerald R. Ford signed the final law on
September 20, 1975 proclaiming that Veterans Day would be an official observed
holiday beginning November 11, 1978.
